1. Christmas (believe it or not) is not festival celebrating gluttony, drunkeness or consumerism. The festival now often referred to by busy people as ‘Xmas’ is an annual holiday that celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ. Jesus of Nazareth (7-2 BC/BCE-26-36 AD/CE), also known as Jesus Christ, is the central figure of the religion of Christianity and is revered by most Christian churches as the Son of God and the incarnation of God. Islam considers Jesus a prophet, while many Hindus see him as an Avatar.

2. A gift or present is the transfer of something, without the need for compensation that is involved in trade (also know as commerce). A gift is a act which is voluntary does not require anything in return. Even though it may involve a social expectation of reciprocity, or a return in the form of prestige or power, a gift is meant to be free.
In many human cultures and societies, the act of mutually exchanging goods, money etc may contribute to enhancing social cohesion. Economists have elaborated the economics of gift-giving into the notion of a gift economy.
The term gift can also refer to anything that makes the other happier or less sad, especially as a favour, including forgiveness and kindness. Gifts aren’t always material objects!

3. There are several alternative names for Christmas. Crimbo is a slang term which first appeared in print in 1928. The variant ‘Crimble’ was first used by John Lennon in a Beatles’ Fan Club Christmas single in 1963. Xmas is an established abbreviation, though it is involved in the secularization of Christmas debate. Yule is used in Northern Europe. In the US, the term(s) “holiday” and / or “season” may be used.

4. Saint Nicholas is the common name for Nicholas of Myra, a Christian saint who was Bishop of Myra in Lycia of Anatolia (now known as Antalya province in Turkey, though at the time it was a Greek-speaking Roman Province). Because of the many miracles attributed to him, he is known as Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker. He had a reputation for secret gift-giving, and is now commonly identified with Santa Claus. Saint Nicholas Day is a festival in early December for children in much of Europe related to surviving legends of the saint, and particularly his reputation as a bringer of gifts.

Images of Santa Claus were popularised through Haddon Sundblom’s depiction of him in The Coca-Cola Company’s Christmas advertising in the 1930’s. The popularity of the image has since spawned urban legends that Santa Claus was himself an invention of Coca-Cola or that Santa wears red and white because those are the colors of the Coca-Cola brand. In fact, Coca-Cola was not the first soft drinks company to utilize the modern image of Santa in its advertising – White Rock Beverages used Santa to sell mineral water in 1915 and then later in ads for ginger ale in 1923. The massive advertising campaign by Coca-Cola simply popularised the depiction of Santa wearing red and white, in contrast to the variety of colours he wore prior to that campaign; red and white was originally given by the 19th century caricaturist and political cartoonist Thomas Nast. The modern depiction of Santa Claus as a fat, jolly man (or gnome) in a red coat and trousers with white cuffs and collar, black leather belt and boots, first became popular in the United States due to Nash’s work.

how do i go about getting this done?

Theodore Roosevelt was the inspiration behind the first teddy bears, all due to a comic strip. When he refused to shoot a bear cub on his hunting travel word got out and a cartoonist drew a picture of him and the bear, this inspired a store owner. Mooris Mitchom had his wife create a teddy bear and this began the journey of the teddy bears.

1906 Americans used the word “teddy bear” instead of “Teddy’s Bears” in an advertisement, after that it just stuck.

In 1912 the very first black teddy bear was introduced by Steiff in honor of those that died on the Titanic. She manufactured 500 of these teddy bears to pass out to the families mourning their loved ones.

Walt Disney produces first teddy bear cartoon in 1924, “Alice and the Three Bears.” This would begin a whole collection of Alice and her many adventures. In 1926 the first edition of “Winnie the Pooh” by A. A. Milne come out, later Disney would buy the rights.

Winnie the Pooh was originally a girl bear named, “Winnipeg.” The bear that inspired Milne to write all his stories was a gift that came from J.K. Farnell & Company that he’d given his son on his first birthday. Farnell was the first British manufacturer to make teddy bears.

Almost all teddy bear companies would close their doors in 1929, some would reopen while others never saw the light again.

In 1944, Smokey the Bear became a National symbol for putting out forest fires. Every year he goes to schools to talk to children about fire safety, during the summer you can find him at campsites giving lessons on the forest.

Wendy Boston made the first lock-in eyes and later would create the first washable teddy bear in 1954.

Teddy bears have come a long way from what was once a wooden toy to the soft, delightful things we cuddle up with at night. Teddy bears continue to expand in the market and will continue for years to come.

Okay, I want to become a professional cartoonist like Jhonen Vasquez (creator of Invader Zim) or Maxwell atoms(creator of the Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy). What’s the best school for me to apply to? I’m intersted in making morbid humored cartoons and things like that.

thanks:D

There are a lot of interesting things that people should know about people who are deaf. In fact, some of the techniques they used to communicate with one another are used by normal people as well.

Let’s start by saying that there are approximately 22 million people in the US who are deaf or who are suffering from deafness problems. It affects both men and women which include infants, children, adults and the elderly. While some were born with it, others lost their hearing later on in life.

In the field of sports, the huddle formation which is used in football was first invented by a liberal arts college for the deaf. This prevented other teams from listening in to what they are planning both during offense and defense.

As for those hand signals that you see in baseball, yes they too were invented by a deaf center fielder for the Cincinnati Reds, namely William Hoy.

Since it is hard for some people to transcribe what is being said, the shorthand was invented by John Gregg who also happens to be deaf.

The deaf use sign language to communicate with one another. Although they cannot understand what someone is saying, they have the ability to read that person’s lips and communicate back by talking to the person or using sign language if that person can understand it.

In fact, their own language has been linguistically defined as a separate language such as English, French, and German.

Because of its usefulness, this technique was later adapted to scuba diving since it is not possible to talk with people under water and even by the military when they want to surprise the enemy.

A lot of celebrities have deafness problems. Some of these people include former presidents, athletes, actors, actresses, lawyers, doctors, inventors, teachers, writers, cartoonists and a lot more. Just to give you a few examples;

One of the most famous composers of all time was Beethoven who was profoundly deaf when he wrote the 9th symphony.

Alexander Bell who invented the telephone and was not deaf was originally an instructor for deaf children and invented this device to help his deaf wife and mother.

Musicians and rocks artists such as Eric Clapton, Peter Townshend of the Who, Sir George Henry Martin of the Beatles and Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys are deaf.

Because deaf people are not able to hear, their others senses are more developed to compensate for this deficiency. This is probably why they have a better safety driving record compared to people who can hear. This may even be attributed to the fact that deaf people live longer hearing people.

No one wants to be born deaf but it happens. Rather than feeling sorry for themselves, they pressed on with their lives and are known worldwide because of their talent or ingenuity. This is why some invented various techniques and inventions which we just take for granted today.

One thing we have to remember out of all of this is that they too are people. They go to work, go to school, vote, own businesses, pay taxes, drive cars and do other things that we normally do. The only difference is that they are deaf and we must respect and understand that.
